The London Mathematical Society, previously named the University College
Mathematical Society was founded in 1864. The collection includes 2 boxes
of letters addressed toThomas Archer Hirst (1830-1892),
mainly in his capacity as a member of the Council of the Society 1853-1892.
Also included in the collection is a curious volume entitled "Receptacle of
the Mathematical Society", a large book presented in 1813 by Joseph
Steevensto a predecessor of the LMS, to hold plans, diagrams, and maps etc.
