Open access for Wellcome Trust research

If your research is Wellcome Trust-funded, it must comply with the Wellcome Trust's open access policy. Where the publisher offers compliant Gold (paid) or Green (deposit) options, you should choose Gold.

How do I claim funds for Gold (paid) open access?

Gold open access
  1. Check whether UCL has a membership scheme with your publisher
  2. If UCL doesn’t have a membership scheme, ask the Open Access Team whether the Gold (paid) option complies with the Wellcome policy, or check SHERPA/ROMEO, SHERPA/FACT or the journal webpages. To comply, the journal must a) deposit the publisher PDF in Europe PubMed Central and b) offer the CC BY licence

The Open Access Team can complete publishers' open access forms for you, and prefers to pay invoices directly. See FAQs. If you already have the invoice, you can e-mail it to us, along with any funding details, or use our claim form.

The Open Access Team will deposit the publisher PDF in UCL Discovery.

If my journal doesn’t have a compliant Gold option, can I still comply?

Green open access

If your journal does not have a compliant Gold option, check whether it allows you to deposit your final manuscript in Europe PubMed Central after six months. Some publishers deposit Wellcome-funded articles automatically. If you need to self-deposit, the Open Access Team can help.

You should also deposit your final manuscript in UCL Discovery.

I need more information about the Wellcome Trust policy

What about publications not covered by the Wellcome Trust policy?

The Wellcome Trust policy applies to research publications, including articles, book chapters and monographs. Other types of publication (such as review articles) can also be funded, if the publisher offers Gold open access. Gold publications are automatically deposited in UCL Discovery.

Green open access in UCL Discovery is available for outputs of all types, copyright permitting. When you deposit full text (and any supplementary files), UCL Discovery staff will check copyright before making it openly available (after any embargo period.)
