The Egyptology collection is located in the Institute of Archaeology
Library, 31-34 Gordon Square (5th floor). The EGYPTOLOGY section is also known as the
"Edwards Library" having been established through a bequest of Amelia Edwards, a popular
novelist, explorer and patron of Sir Flinders Petrie. This very important collection covers all aspects
of Egyptology (including Coptic studies) and includes publications and excavation reports produced by such
institutions as the Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire and the Egypt Exploration Society.
Other collections which may be relevant include Ancient History
and Classics, which are all housed in the Main Library.
Other aspects of archaeology, e.g. Mediterranean (especially of the Bronze Age), Classical and scientific
methods in archaeology will also be found at the Institute of Archaeology Library in Gordon Square.

Book collections
The Library has its own classification scheme for arranging books on
a typical classmark for a book on the "open" shelves will consist of the name of a subject
(indicating a section of the library) followed by letters and numbers denoting its classified position on
the shelves in that section. For EGYPTOLOGY the Garside classification scheme allows
for separate sequences for the major excavation report series
e.g.
EGYPTOLOGY E 25 for the Memoires of the Institut français
d’archéologie orientale du Caire
EGYPTOLOGY E 42 for the Memoirs of the Egypt Exploration Society
A full range of Egyptological material which is not site specific is also held by the Library - e.g. works
on ancient Egyptian architecture, fine and applied art, religion, science and technology, epigraphy,
language and literature (including Coptic) and papyrology.
Journals covering Egyptology are interfiled in a single sequence alphabetically by title with other
journals shelved in the Institute of Archaeology and have the prefix INST ARCH Pers.
Journals are normally available for overnight loan (from 4.00pm). For

Electronic sources
Material held in electronic form is available to registered members of UCL: you will usually need your
UCL userid/password for Information Systems in order to gain access to them. For the full list of electronic

A range of electronic versions of journal titles is available. Start from the list on the Library's web

details of access arrangements for each title.
Exam papers
Copies of UCL examination papers for undergraduate courses (from 1997 onwards) are available on the web
at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Library/exam.shtml. Printed copies of the papers
are held in the Main Library in the Short Loan Collection: ask at the Issue Desk for them.

The Library of the Egypt Exploration Society is also an invaluable
resource (located at 3 Doughty Mews, London WC1N 2PG). For Hellenistic and Roman Egypt the
Institute of Classical Studies Library/Joint Library of
the Hellenic and Roman Societies is an important external resource. Also of interest are the
Institute of Historical Research Library,
King's College Library,
The Library of the School of Oriental & African
Studies and the Warburg Library.
