Research Funder Policies on Open Access

Step 1: Check your funder's policy - Wellcome Trust

Wellcome Trust Wellcome Trust grant holders must ensure that their papers are deposited in UK PubMed Central (UKPMC) within 6 months of publication. They can achieve this by:

  1. Publishing in a journal with an author pays open access option, then arranging payment from UCL Library Services (this is the Wellcome Trust's preferred option)
  2. Publishing in a journal that allows the final, peer-reviewed version of the author's manuscript to be deposited in UKPMC, then depositing this version
  3. Publishing in an open access journal, then depositing the published version of the paper in UKPMC

All Wellcome grant holders submitting manuscripts to journals should find out in advance whether the publisher complies with the Trust's policy, and how they can meet the Trust's requirements (see the next step).

If using option 1, the Trust has provided UCL with funds to meet OA costs. How to claim these funds.
