Leskernick Project Forum - diaries

From: Tony Williams

Question for Paul,

I am pleased to see that diaries have finally hit the Leskernick web page. However, why only the directors, and not other participants? Your comments about the internal politics of academic knowledge being made manifest through the diaries is absolutely correct although this is only one side of a very multi-faceted 'journal' of everyday experience at Leskernick. Perhaps you should endeavour to recognise and illustrate other performances , perspectives, relationships etc etc. through OTHER participants' diaries. It's not ALL politics you know - sometimes people had fun!

The very good reason why it is only the directors' diaries that so far appear in this section is because they are the only ones I have! As other participants will know - at least those for whom I have contact details - I have been pestering people for their diaries on disk for the last six months - yourself included I'm sure!

I have also asked Henry to write an introductory text for the diaries - a non-director you'll note - unfortunately he has been busy with other things and hasn't got this to me yet (hint!). Perhaps my introductory note is a bit bogged down in the politics of the project, and I am aware that Leskernick can be fun too. What I hope is that the diaries themselves (and articles such as your own 'Imaging the Self') reveal that the project is not all conflict and contention. My introductory remarks do, however, reflect my experiences attempting to 'publish' the diaries on the web site: problems that have everything to do with this particular genre of writing. Perhaps Sue, Chris or Barbara could be enticed into commenting?

As regards putting other diaries on-line, all I can do is plead again for all project members with diaries to get them to me on disk - perhaps we can assemble another 'sample set' that reflects a different side of the project: peace, harmony, joy and pranks at Leskernick - but then there was the incident of Chris's socks!

OK, fair cop on the directors diaries. I know that in 1997 many participants wordprocessed their diaries (but certainly not all). The students who did are still at the Institute of Archaeology. Is it worth sending them a memo? - I can give you their names if you require. As for mine - I cannot send you it on disk simply because I have not got it saved in Word. Instead, I processed it on a non IBM compatible Canon Wordstar which can no longer convert files for some reason. However, I would be happy to send you a hard copy should you wish to use excerpts? - let me know.

As I said before I think that your intro piece very well conveys an essence of the political wranglings at Leskernick and which extend beyond, although there are many other features one could focus on. Is it worth attempting a representation of these different sides by editing the diaries into more manageable bitesize chunks? I feel that so many diaries in their entirety is a bit undigestible. What does everyone else feel about editing - surely a contentious issue.
