UCL Research Challenges Grant Awarded to the Centre

Dr Maria Kett of the Leonard Cheshire Disability and Inclusive Development Centre was awarded £4,500 from the UCL Research Challenges scheme for her project on 'Security and Inclusion for People with Disabilities during Disasters'. Dr Kett will be working in collaboration with Dr John Twigg (Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre) and Dr Lin Tze Tan (UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering).

Paper presented at the Development Studies Association Annual Conference, University of Ulster

Dr Raymond Lang presented a paper on the potential impact of the global economic crisis upon disabled people in developing countries at the Annual Conference of the Development Studies Association held in September. The paper explored the impact of the crisis upon the poverty, health, employment and livelihood status of disabled people. The paper concluded by urging bilateral and multilateral donor agencies not to further decrease funding for disability and development initiatives in the wake of a continued recession.

Papers presented at the 10th UKFIET International Conference on Education and Development, Oxford

Professor Nora Groce and Dr Maria Kett made presentations at the 10th UKFIET International Conference on Education and Development in Oxford. Dr Kett presented in the Symposium on 'Disability, Education and Development: Implications for Policies and Practices'. Her presentation was called 'Disability, vulnerability and citizenship: To what extent is education a protective mechanism for children with disabilities in countries affected by conflict?' Professor Groce presented a paper she has co-written with Parul Bahkshi, entitled 'Poverty and illiteracy among adults with disability: an unexplored area of concern' (Working Paper 9 in the Leonard Cheshire Disability and Inclusive Development Centre Working Paper Series).

Conference of the UN States Parties, United Nations, New York

On 3rd September, Professor Nora Groce addressed the Conference of the UN States Parties in two forums held by the Department of Social and Economic Affairs. She presented at the 'Forum on the Emerging Theme of the Global Economic Crisis, Poverty and the Implementation of the Convention', and the 'Forum on the Millenium Development Goals and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities'.
