1834 - ????
Income of £1400 a year from the post. According to the OxfordDNB, "Alison vigorously upheld the authority of the state", especially against trade unions and Chartism. He pursued very repressive measures against them, especially in 1837-38. It is claimed that he all but strangled Scottish trade unionism at birth, [though this claim is doubtful]. He also took severe measures against Chartism. See ODNB entry for more details of his views on trade unionism.
