Biography

Partner with Alex. Dalrymple in Alex. Dalrymple & Co., resident at the time of compensation but in London at the time of his death in 1856.

  1. Frederick Garraway, merchant, aged 50, living at 4 Finsbury Circus, London, in 1841, with Lucinda and Frederick age 20. In the same house was his business partner Alexander Dalrymple and his family. Later census records show Frederick (the son) was born c. 1819 in Dominica. In 1851, T.[sic] H. Garraway, West India Merchant, born Ireland, age 59, was living at 13 Marlbro Place, Marylebone, with wife Lucinda age 62, children Alicia age 34, George age 30, Lucinda age 27, Cassandra age 24 and Sarah age 17, plus a daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and various servants. His wife and all the children were born in Dominica. The nun named Lucinda Garraway, born in Dominica c. 1824 and living in 1901 at St Mary's Home for Penitants, Wantage, Berkshire, was presumably a daughter.

  2. Death of Frederick Harvey [sic.] Garraway registered in Marylebone Q3 1856 (the underlying record shows a mistranscription for Hervey). Burial at Kensal Green All Souls of Frederick Henry [sic] Garraway aged 65 of 11 Marlborough Street St Johns Wood on 08/07/1856 (and on the same day the removal for reinterment from Streatham of Mary Jane Garraway, presumably his wife): again, the underlying image is clearly Frederick Hervey Garraway.

  3. Under the will of Frederick Hervey Garraway gentleman of [Marlborough Place] Marylebone proved 13/08/1856, he left to his sister Mrs Catherine Scott residing at Belfast the income on 12 shares in the Belfast Banking Company for her life, with at her decease the shares passing to her four daughters, Garraway's nieces. He left the children of Mr Robert Gordon of Dominica 1000 dollars that he [Gordon] owed to Garraway on bond. Garraway had, he said, made provision for his wife and daughter in a deed of 20/09/1855, and he accordingly left the remainder of his estate to his sons Frederick and George Garraway, both residing at Boundary Road in Hampstead and carrying on business with their father as merchants at Crosby Square in the City. The brothers continued in business until 1863: George Garraway was bankrupt in 1866.

  4. Frederick Hervey Garraway was an executor for his uncle Robert Garraway of Dominica (q.v.) and one of his residuary legatees (will proved in 1831). In a codicil of 1830 Robert required that the legacy to his nephew Frederick Hervey Garraway [it's unclear whether this referred to 60 acres of land explicitly willed to Frederick Hervey Garraway or to his share in the residual estate, or both] be deducted from the £4650 owed by Frederick Hervey Garraway, the balance of which was to be repaid to the estate for the benefit of the children of Capt. Robert Garraway of the Brig Betsey and Sophia, 'he [Frederick Hervey Garraway] having taken care to help himself and act with the greatest ingratitude.'
