Sir George Henry Rose

Biography

Son of George Rose (q.v.). MP for Southampton 1794-1813 and Christchurch 1818-32 and 1837-44.

His father George Rose (q.v.) was agent for Dominica 1784-1805, and an MP, and settled upon him in 1796 the Dominican property inherited from his mother Theodora nee Duer. George Henry Rose also provided testimony in the contested claim for Big Duers estate in Antigua, as nephew of Rowland Duer senior (q.v.). He was also the beneficiary under the will of his wife's aunt, Frances Jennings (q.v.).

  1. George Henry Rose has an entry in the ODNB (as does his father George Rose (q.v.) as 'politician and publicist' and brother William Stewart Rose as 'poet', as well as George Henry's Rose's son Hugh Henry Rose, Baron Strathnairn, as 'army officer and diplomatist'). Another son George Pitt Rose (1797-1851) was also an MP, named after his godfather William Pitt.

  2. At 7 Old Palace Place in the census of 1841 (at Old Palace Yard also in 1830 and 1838). In the household of his son-in-law the Earl of Morton at Ratho, Midlothian, in 1851.
