Biography

Partner in London merchant firm of Hon Wm Fraser, Alexander (q.v.) from at least 1836.

  1. At Sutton, death of Hugh Hyndman late of the colony of Demerara 09/09/1840; burial at St Luke Chelsea of Hugh Hyndman 'Sutton Middlesex' aged 56, 15/09/1840.

  2. Will of Hugh Hyndman merchant of London proved 26/09/1840 (made in 1837). Under the will he left £1000 each to the four daughters of his late aunt Jane Spear of Carrickfergus, and to one of them, Catherine Spear, he left his property in Bridge Street in Belfast. To another cousin George Crawford Hyndman son of James Hyndman of Belfast he left a further £1000, and to George Crawford Hyndman's three sisters all resident in Dublin he left £1500. To his godson Robert Augustus Hyndman son of Charles Robertson Hyndman lately departed from Gravesend for Van Diemens land he left £1000, and to his godson Hugh Hyndman Jones son of Richard Michael Jones he also left £1000. He left £1000 to Jemima Evans otherwise Firman formerly of no. 4 York Place Lambeth but lately residing in my house no. 3 Sydney Place Brixton. Subject to those legacies he left his estate including property in Demerara to John Beckles Hyndman (q.v.), and if John Beckles Hyndman died to John Beckles Hyndman's children: failing those, the estate went to Charles Robertson Hyndman. If he owned part of Blankenburgh at his death with his partners in Wm. Fraser, Alexander (together with 'our partner' Joseph Simpson), then the partners were to have unfettered control and direction of Hugh Hyndman's share, to remain consignees and to have veto over the sale of Hugh Hyndman's share.

  3. Genealogical material online shows Hugh Hyndman as the son of Hugh Hyndman (1751-1819) of Eglantine Hill, West India merchant, and nephew of the Belfast merchants Robert Hyndman (1750-1822) and James Hyndman (1761-1825). Hugh Hyndman's legatee George Crawford Hyndman, the son of James Hyndman, has an entry in the Dictionary of Irish Biography as 'amateur naturalist.'
