Biography

Son of Peter and Susannah Henrietta Pegus.  The Pegus family had cotton estates on Carriacou.

  1. Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Oct. 11, 1813. [S. of Peter, of Greenwich, gent.] Matric. Michs. 1813; B.A. 1818; M.A. 1821. Ord. deacon (Lincoln) Sept. 22, 1816; priest, Mar. 7, 1819. Married, Apr. 14, 1821, Charlotte Susannah Elizabeth, Countess of Lindsey, widow of the 9th Earl [his first cousin]. Died Apr. 21, 1860. (Burke, Peerage; F. P. White.)

  2. An indenture concerning the sale of the Hermitage estate in Carriacou was executed in 1827 by Susannah Henrietta Pegus of Stamford, her son Peter William Pegus and his siblings Henrietta Margaretta, Mary Anne Jane and Frederick Edward Pegus. When Susannah Henrietta was buried on May 11 1832 aged 73 she was described as of Croom's Hill Kent.

  3. Pegus' daughter Maria Antoinetta married Charles, 10th Marquess of Huntly; his step-daughter Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Bertie married the ironmaster John Guest.

  4. Pegus' step-daughter, Lady Charlotte Guest, according to her entry in the ODNB (as 'translator, businesswoman and collector') 'took an instant - and lasting - dislike' to him on his marriage to her mother (who was Pegus' first cousin).

  5. Death of Peter William Pegus registered Marylebone Q2 1860, when he was late of 30 Baker street, Portman Square and left effects under £5000; in 1861 his widow Charlotte was a visitor at Orton Longueville staying with her daughter and son-in-law Charles Gordon Marquess of Huntly.
