Biography

Alexander Gillespie of Sunnyside, Lanark. Awarded compensation with John Deacon (q.v.) as the two surviving trustees of John Inglis (q.v.).

  1. Alexander Gillespie was one of three trustees for John Inglis who died in 1822 or 1823, the senior partner in Inglis Ellice of Mark Lane. This John Inglis is not to be confused with John Inglis of East India House (whose will is PROB 11/1661).

  2. John Inglis' will (dated 28/08/1822, PROB 11/1660) appears to make no mention of Deacon, Campbell or Gillespie, identified as trustees for John Inglis in the Slave Compensation Records. It is a trust will but the executors and trustees are identical, viz. Inglis's two sons John Bellingham and James, and two sons-in-law. Administration was granted to Robert Ellice in July 1834.

  3. 27th October 1817: "At the Manse of Lanark, Alexander Gillespie, Esq. of Sunnyside, to Miss Jane Menzies, eldest daughter of the Rev. W. Menzies, Minister of Lanark." They had at least 8 daughters and 3 sons - all baptised in Lanark between 1819 and 1840. "[Deaths] Dec. 28 [1839] At Sunnyside, Lanark, the wife of Alexander Gillespie, senior, late of America-Square."

  4. The will and inventory of Alexander Gillespie of Sunnyside, Lanark, were lodged at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, dated 05/06/1846.
