Biography

Son of the West India merchant and slave-owner David Mitchell. Brother of John [the older] (q.v.), Samuel (q.v.), Francis Henry and William junior, and a partner in W. R. & S Mitchell (q.v.) which failed in 1841-2.  Immediately prior to this bankruptcy his daughter Ellen Kate had on 26/07/1841 married Hon. Frederick Thomas Pelham, the second son of the Earl of Chichester.

  1. Born West Indies.

  2. Fiat of bankruptcy and loss of directorship of WIDCO; lost directorship of Guardian Fire & Life Assurance; certified Jan. 1842; appears to have resumed directorship at Guardian Fire & Life until death.

  3. A banker of 57a Upper Wimpole Street when named as an executor in the will of Sarah Tierney Myers (q.v.).

  4. Death registered Q4 1870 aged 86 at Marylebone: buried 'of Nottingham Place, St Marylebone', All Souls Kensal Green 'aged 85' 02/11/1870.

  5. Will proved by brother Francis Henry Mitchell of 12 Upper Wimpole Street 19/04/1871 of Rowland Mitchell formerly of Lime Street but late of 7 Nottingham Place who died 27/10/1870, effects under £300.

  6. NB  Francis Henry Mitchell (c. 1795-1891) late of 12 Upper Wimpole Street who died 02/08/1891 left £203,998 3s 4d: will proven 05/10/1891 by Frank Johnstone Mitchell of Llanfrechfa Grange Newport Mon.; William Rowland Mitchell of Salthrop Wroughton Wilts.; Col. Herbert Leonard Mitchell of 17A Onslow Gardens; Clayton Mitchell of West Highlands near Winchester Commander RN and Arthur Charles Mitchell of Cottles Melksham Wilts., gentleman, the sons the executors.

Sale in 1842 of a debt of £21,143 13s sterling and upwards secured on Stoney-hill and Deodand estates, as a result of the bankruptcy of Rowland Mitchell. Rowland Mitchell had presumably acquired the debt: in an earlier sale in 1824 the debt was sold by the assignees of James Wildman. Times 28/04/1842 p. 12.
