Biography

  1. “Sir Claudius-Stephen Hunter, Baronet, D.C.L., elected 1804 alderman of London, and Lord Mayor 1811, born 24 Feb. 1775; married, 15 July 1797, Penelope-Maria, only da. of John Free, of London, merchant, and has issue,--1. John, b. 26 May 1798, m., 1820, Sarah, da. Of W.N.W. Hewett, of co. York, esq., and by her (who d. Nov. 1826) had issue, three das., who d. infants, and one son, Claudius-Stephen-Paul, b/ 21 Sept. 1824;--2. Maria, b. 20 Aug. 1800, d. Unm. 21 June 1825;-- 3. Eleanor, b. 1802, d. an infant;-- 4. Thomas-Claude, b. 10 April 1804, d. Feb. 1832;-- 5. Samuel, b. 8 Aug. 1806, d. 17 Feb. 1834.” Son of barrister Henry Hunter of Beech Hill, Berkshire and Mary, 3rd daughter of William Sloane, esq. Further biographical details from the same source show his sister Mary married William Manning (q.v.), MP for Lymington in 1792.

  2. Solicitor of Lincoln's Inn from 1797. His first marriage "brought him considerable wealth and his practice became very large." President of the London Life Association from 1835.

  3. Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter, Bart., of Artillery Ground, London, had a vote as a proprietor of the British American Land Company in 1835, so had bought between 5 and 14 shares at £50 each.
