Grand-daughter of William Berney, niece of Dorothy Elizabeth Boehm and cousin of George Robert Boehm Berney (both of whom q.v.), awarded with her sister Emma Doherty (q.v.) 2/9ths of the compensation for the Lower Berney's plantation on Barbados.
- The evidence for identification is indirect but conclusive. The London merchant William Berney (c. 1728-1762) had three children, Dorothy Elizabeth (who married Edmund Boehm), Robert (the father of George Robert Boehm Berney) and Mary Eleanor, who married Thomas Henchman and died at New Burlington Street in 1799. Mary Eliza Henchman was born 04/08/1790 and baptised 12/08/1790 at Westminster. Eliza [sic] Henchman married Joseph Doherty at St James Piccadilly 29/06/1816. Henry Edward Doherty, the son of Joseph and Mary Eliza Doherty was baptised at Pontefract 27/51817 (when his father was described as of the 13th Light Dragoons. The will of Mary Eliza Doherty, who died at Vernon House Southampton 11/05/1863, was proved by Major General Henry Edward Doherty the son 05/06/1863, effects under £450. Major-General Henry Edward Doherty himself left £88,716 18s 3d when he died 15/09/1885. Both the 1851 and 1861 census show Mary Eliza Doherty, Fundholder aged 60 born N. Burlington Street London and Fundholder aged 70 born London respectively, at Vernon House in Southampton.
