George Gibbs

Biography

Bristol West India merchant, partner in Gibbs & Bright, cousin of William Gibbs of Tyntesfield (1790-1875), who was one of his executors.

  1. Son of George Gibbs senior (1753-1818) and Esther Farr. Married 1802 Salvina Hendy (died c. 1809), the daughter of Henry and Henrietta Hendy, Barbadian merchants. Married cousin Harriet Gibbs, daughter of Anthony, 1814. Partner with his father in George Gibbs & Son, and then with Robert Bright in Gibbs, Bright (q.v.)  Retired c. 1839 but left his capital in the firm and invested a share of a further £9000 to develop the plantation trade.  Died 1863, sp.: the £60,000 capital in his firm was paid out to his estate. He left Belmont House to his cousin Joseph, Anthony Gibbs' youngest son. His personal estate was £90,000. 

  2. Invested or co-invested with Robert Bright in Bristol Dock & Canal Company, Great Western Cotton Works, Clifton Bridge, the Great Western Railway, in which both were promoters and directors, and the Great Western Steamship Company.
