Joseph Barton Phipps

???? - 1793

Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, probably a lawyer in Kingston. Son of Joseph Phipps of Jamaica, according to the will of his [Joseph Barton Phipps] great-uncle John Phipps of Tottenham proved in 1770. The land in St Andrews described in the will of Joseph Barton Phipps as Blairs Pen or Unity Park Pen has not yet been traced beyond the will of his uncle and heir John Phipps of Southwark (q.v.).

  1. Will of Joseph Barton Phipps gentleman of Kingston Jamaica [made in 1790] proved 15/10/1795. He asked to be buried near his brother [later in the will identified as John Phipps] in St Andrews Church. He left his property at Nos. 32 and 34 'Broad Street Buildings' [identified only as in Britain, but presumably in London] to his uncle John Phipps of Devonshire. He left a house at Tottenham to Mrs Mary Sterrop [?] the sister of his 'Great and honoured uncle' John Phipps of Tottenham. He left £1000 currency to his housekeeper Ann Gordon 'a free born woman', and six enslaved people: Lucy, Clarissa, Betty, Charity, Hope and London, as well as any other enslaved people he owned at his death. After several monetary legacies to individuals in Jamaica, including members of Ann Gordon's family, he left land called Blairs Pen or Unity Park Pen in St Andrew to his uncle John Phipps 'of Devonshire in the County of Middlesex [sic]'. He freed his washerwoman Sukey. He left his residuary estate to the poor people of Kingston.
