Biography

Slave-owner in Demerara and married (as his second wife) to a slave-owner in Barbados. Two of his sons - James Allen Dalzell and William Denholm Dalzell (q.v.) - were part of the 'swing east' as HEIC men.

  1. Will of Allen Dalzell of Plantation Brittalls [sic: in fact, Buttalls] in St George Barbados [made in 1824] proved 25/05/1826. In the will he left his wife Mary Elizabeth an enslaved man named Fingal in Demerara and Edward Isaac and William Francis in Barbados, and Lucy and Betsy Queen in the said island. He left the rest of his estate equally among 4 sons and 2 daughters. The estate of Buttalls belonged to his wife although he held a mortgage over it. In a codicil written at Clifton 14/12/1825, he left to his wife all the slaves to which he was entitled by the death of his son John Glassford Dalzell.
