Biography

Wife of Francis Rose (1656-1720). Inherited a life interest in her husband's Jamaican estates when her son Thomas died s.p. in 1724. Reportedly in London from 1724 until her death in 1727.

  1. On 16/12/1724, Margaret, a servant of Mrs Rose was baptised at St George the Martyr, Queen square: 'Margaret an Adult person, a Negro female servt. of Mrs. Rose in Queen Square; wife of one Richd. Samson a Negro servt. likewise in the family at Jamaica, whither she is returning. The lady was consenting, and the B[isho]p was consulted. Mr. Wm. Winter (a servt. in the House) & Eliz. Bush, Sister to Mrs. Rose, & Eliz. Scot, her daughter, & the Minister’s wife of the P[ar]ish in Jamaica where she dwells [?].

Whereas my late husband by his will dated 18/11/1720 gave to our son Thomas Rose all residue of his estate, and for default of issue to me for my life, then to his nephew John Rose, subject to the payment of £3000 to such persons as I should appoint, and Thomas Rose is since dead without issue, I hereby appoint the said £3000 to be paid to my two nieces Mary Fuller, wife of Thomas Fuller of Jamaica, Esquire, and Christian Forbes, wife of Alex Forbes of Jamaica, Esquire.

To Francis Oldfield of Bloomsbury Square, Esquire, and Mr John Serocold of London, merchant, £50 apiece.

All residue to my said two nieces and sole executrixes for Jamaica and Francis Oldfield and John Serocold for Great Britain.

Proved 11/12/1727 in London by Francis Oldfield and John Serocold.
