John Vincent Purrier senior

1773 - 1833

Biography

London West India merchant, former partner in Hibberts, Fuhr and Purrier, and subsequently a partner in Purrier & Thomas.

  1. Will of John Vincent Purrier of York Terrace Regents Park [made in 1832] proved 02/05/1833. Under the will he left his widow Charlotte Maria an annuity of £500 p.a. He noted he had already made provision for his daughter Charlotte Maria, wife of Patrick Cruikshank, and left her £100 as a token of affection. He left his sons John Vincent Purrier [jun.], Edward and Thomas £5000 each, and a further £2000 to John Vincent Purrier subordinated to the other legacies [i.e. payable only after the others were satisfied]. He left his property in the West Indies, unspecified but including enslaved people, in trust to his sons and Patrick Cruikshank, with detailed instructions for the management of the estates, including using John Vincent Purrier jun. and Edward Purrier as consignees should they be in business together, and John Vincent Purrier jun. as attorney if he was in Jamaica at the time of his father's death.

For Westmoreland 686, William Kent Thomas, former partner with John Vincent Purrier, lodged a counterclaim T71/1211 Westmoreland no. 686. The firm had been appointed consignees and factors under the Chancery suits of Hedley v Hedley and Hibbert v Hedley in 1823, and as Receivers. He subsequently reduced the scope of the counterclaim.
