Jeremiah Ames

???? - 1820

Biography

Between 1811 and his death, Jeremiah Ames was the eponymous partner in Pinney, Ames & Co. of Bristol with his brothers-in-law Charles and John Frederick (who retired in 1819). The firm appears to have continued under that name after Jeremiah Ames' death in 1820.

  1. Will of Jeremiah Ames of Clifton Gloucestershire [made in 1818] proved 25/08/1820. He left his estate to his wife Mary, with an annuity of £500 p.a. under an indenture made with his uncle John Ames. In a codicil Jeremiah Ames left her one-third of the £30,000 he was entitled to under another indenture of his uncle.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1831 [EA] - 1831 [LA] → Other

In 1831, the enslaved people on the estate were registered to 'Pinney & Ames' although Jeremiah Ames had died in 1820. Presumably the entry referred to a mortgage or other assignment dating from the period he was a partner. The compensation under Nevis Claim No. 1 was paid to Charles Pinney and Robert Edward Case, identified as trustees for 'Mrs Ames', who was the daughter of John Pinney.

1828 [EA] - 1828 [LA] → Other

In 1828, the enslaved people on the estate were registered to 'Pinney & Ames' although Jeremiah Ames had died in 1820. Presumably the entry referred to a mortgage or other assignment dating from the period he was a partner.
