Sir James Robert Longden

Biography

Youngest son of John R. Longden, a proctor of Doctor's Commons, London. Married Alice Emily, daughter of James Samuel Berridge (q.v.). Held a series of administrative appointments: Government Clerk, Falkland Islands, 1844; Acting Colonial Secretary, Falkland Islands, 1845; President, Virgin Islands, 1861; Governor of Dominica, 1865; of Hondoras, 1867; of Trinidad, 1870; of British Guiana, 1874; and of Ceylon, 1876-1883. Died at Longhope, Watford, Hertfordshire, 04/10/1891; his will was proved 11/11/1891, personal effects £24,937 3s 4d.
