Biography

Brother of William Lindsay Darling (q.v.).

Sir Ralph Darling was born in Ireland in 1772, the eldest child of Christopher Darling, a soldier in the 45th Regiment, and his wife Ann. Moved to the West Indies with his family in 1785. Soldier in the West Indies, 1786-1802.

Governor of Mauritius, 1819-1824 and of New South Wales, 1825-1831: "Objected to slavery on moral grounds." Returned to England May 1832. Died 02/04/1858 in Brighton.
