Biography

John Eykyn Hovenden (given only as John Eykyn in the Register of Claims), awarded part of the compensation for Water Valley in St Mary Jamaica with Charles R. Simpson as trustees of the marriage settlement of Col. Farquharson and Miss Nasmyth.

  1. Death of John Eykyn Hovenden aged 88 registered at Bath Q2 1867. Will of John Eykyn Hovenden late of the City of Bath barrister-at-law who died 29/05/1867 at 6 Camden-crescent Bath proved 25/06/1867 by Cordelia Hovenden widow the relict and Valentine Fowler Hovenden the son, effects under £60,000.

  2. In 1833, John E. Hovenden was shown at No. 33 Upper Gloucester Place and in 1847 at 8 Oxford Square Hyde Park.

  3. His grandson Sir George Dashwood Taubman Goldie (1846-1925, son of Carolina Eveline Hovenden) was instrumental in the founding of Nigeria.

T71/856 St Mary No. 144A-D; T71/1606 letter from Oliverson & Co 23/01/1837: award had been made to John Eykyn Hovenden, Col Robert Bowen of Coldstream Guards and Mr C.R. Simpson, trustees of marriage settlement of Col and Mrs Farquharson (formerly Miss Nasmyth), but Col. Bowen is abroad, 'we have made repeated enquiries but have been able to learn nothing certain about Col. Bowen's movements', need power of attorney to collect the money; on a previous trip, Col Bowen had left a full power of attorney; 'there is no doubt he will very much regret the inconvenience now caused by his absence.' Now after 12 months delay, asking for new award.
