1765 - 1841
Former East India merchant, born c. 1765 in Scotland. An Allan Gilmore aged 76 was buried at St Marylebone 03/07/1841, which would be consistent with the sale of his effects in 1842. 1841 census: Allan Gilmore Independent aged 76 Upper Portland Place, with Peter Gilmore aged 25.
The Allan Gilmore of Stamford Hill, also an East Indian merchant, who failed in the late 1840s is possibly connected: he is shown in the 1851 census as living with 'R.W.A. Gilmore' aged 80 retired from business. 'R.W. A.' is almost certainly Mungo William Allan [or Allen] Gilmore, buried 10/10/1851 at Hackney St John, and may be the co-mortgagee 'Mungo Gilmore' specified in T71/1200. Mungo William Allen Gilmore appears in the Old Bailey Sessions as a ships-chandler of Stamford Hill in 1830.
Auctions by Phillips of Allan Gilmore's picture collection and then on the premises 1 Upper Portland Pl., the furniture etc.
T71/1200 identifies him as an ex-East Indian merchant at 1 Upper Portland Place. Ancestry.com, London, England Deaths & Burials 1813-1980 [database online]. 1841 census online.
