Biography

Partner in Pitcairn & Amos (q.v.).

  1. Identified as the son of Rev Robert Pitcairn of that Ilk (died c. 1792), born Kintbury Berkshire 01/12/1781; apprenticed in London aged 15 and became a West India merchant.  Acquired and lost a large fortune (reportedly £40,000). Master of the Skinners Company.  In 1808 went to Jamaica and was Collector of Customs.  Built Culver Cottage Bognor, then moved to live with his nephew Rev. James Pelham Pitcairn at Longsight Rectory.

  2. Certainly a William Pitcairn formerly of Kingstone Dublin and then of Eccles but late of Longsight near Manchester died 11/10/1862: his will was proven by among others his nephew Rev James Pelham Pitcairn 06/11/1862, effects under £6000.  W. Pitcairn is also shown as Collector at Port Morant in the 1808 Jamaica Almanac.

  3. William Pitcairn of the Crescent Bridge St. Blackfriars m. Phoebe Richardson a spinster 08/04/1820 St George Bloomsbury; 1841 census William (born abt 1781) and Phoebe Pitcairn (also born abt 1781), both 'Ind[ependent]', living at Culver Street, South Berstead, Chichester.
