Biography

Charlotte Carter, previously Adcock, née Leeson, counterclaimant for ownership of enslaved persons in Trinidad as legatee of Matthew Leeson, the compensation for which was assigned to John Henry Nelson and Benjamin Adam (both q.v.) after payment of £1100 to Carter and her husband John Carter.

  1. Counterclaim by Charlotte Adcock of 5 Sherwood Cottages, Albany Road, Camberwell, as legatee for £2500 bequeathed by Matthew Leeson on 05/10/1808, of which remained unpaid 31st May 1829 £2721 14s 1d, received since then £292 12s 8d. The initial claimant Amelia Glenton (q.v.) assigned the compensation to Nelson and Adam after payment of £1100 to John Carter and his wife the late Charlotte Adcock.

  2. William Adcock of St Pancras, Bachelor, married Charlotte Leeson of this parish [Paddington St James], Spinster, by license, 21/08/1828. John Carter of St Mary Newington in the County of Surrey (Bachelor) married Charlotte Adcock of this parish [Camberbell St George] a Widow by License 28/11/1835. Possible second marriage of the same John Carter, 09/01/1838 in Newington St Mary to Esther Beale. No trace has yet been found of a likely Charlotte Carter married to John Carter in the 1841 or 1851 censuses.
