Judah Cohen

1768 - 1838

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

London merchant, partner in H & J Cohen of Mansell Street, awarded the compensation in 45 separate awards, some as owner and mortgagee but many as assignee of Nathan Joseph of Kingston Jamaica. It seems likely that Nathan Joseph had bought up small claims and then assigned them to Judah Cohen. Hymen and Judah Cohen appear to have divided the property of their partnership c. 1829, emerging with separate holdings of plantations and enslaved people attached to them in Jamaica.

  1. Son of Moses Cohen (1734-1831), born 1768 died 1838, married Grace da Costa.

  2. Will of Judah Cohen, merchant of Herne Hill, [made in 1837] proved 11/01/1839. He left an annuity of £1200 p.a. to his wife. His estates included Potsdam and Corby Castle which he placed in trust together with apprentices attached to them. The Judah Hymen Cohen of 21 Grand Parade St Leonards-on-Sea Hastings who was buried at Kensal Green All Souls aged 60 26/04/1855 was his nephew and son-in-law.
