George Fife Angas

Biography

George Fife Angas (1789-1879), merchant, banker and Australian politican, signed for the compensation in four claims in Honduras, where he had connections through his shipping business: his father had imported mahogany from Honduras for his carriage-building business in Newcastle-upom-Tyne. George Fife Angas' entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography says of him: 'In London he joined influential reformers in fighting for the emancipation of slaves and the restoration of Nonconformist missionaries in British Honduras.'

  1. Born 01/05/1789 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Caleb Angus (1742-1831) and Sarah Jameson, died 15/05/1879 South Australia.

  2. George Fife Angas of Jeffrey Square was an investor in the British American Land Company in 1835. He had four votes so had purchased at least 50 shares at £50 each.
