Biography

George Reid of Jamaica who rented Watlington Hall Norfolk was the father of George Reid junior (q.v.). George Reid senior appears in the Jamaica Almanacs against the Friendship estate in Trelawny, and George Reid junior, against Bunkers Hill.

  1. The George Reid whose wife was Elizabeth Lydia Reid (q.v.) and who died in 1823, was the same man as George Reid senior. He is linked to the Friendship estate through the claims of his son-in-law George Capper (q.v.).  St Mary's Church Wherstead contains table-top tomb of (1) George Reid of Island of Jamaica died Jan 28 1823 aged 75 years; Elizabeth Lydia, relict of the above, d. Nov. 11th 1842 aged 83; and Mary Reid, dau of George Reid [junior] d. 24th February 1850 aged 53, and (2) Rev George Capper, for 32 years Vicar of this parish d. 4th June 1847 in 80th year and Ann, widow of Rev. George Capper, d. 24th August 1855 in 76th year of her age.

  2. Will of George Reid formerly of the parish of Trelawney, Cornwall, Jamaica but now of Wivenhoe Essex proved 31/07/1823. He left his daughter Mary Reid (q.v., under Mary Reid of Wherstead) £300 and an annuity of £500, and charged £10,000 upon Friendship for her or her children. He left the Friendship estate itself, subject to the other legacies charged on it, to his son George Reid. His executors were his son George Reid, his wife Elizabeth Lydia Reid and his sister Mary Reid.
