Barrett, The Barretts of Jamaica: The Family of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Athlone, Continuum International Publishing Group, 2000) p. 132: shows that John Manderson became a member of the House of Assembly for St James in October 1831, to replace W. S. Grignon; he was re-elected in 1833. Ibid. p. 105: reference to John Manderson as a 'mulatto'.
