Jamaica St Ann 632 (Retreat Pen)

T71/857: claim by Samuel Barrett Moulton Barrett of the parish of St Ann Esq. owner-in-fee and tenant in tail. Counterclaim by C.N. Pallmer of the parish of St Dorothy and Martin Williams of Great Britain, 'equitable incumbrance in respect of several breaches of trust committed by Ed Barrett'. £80,587 10s 0d. Counterclaim also from Barbara Hewan [sp?] Trelawney, annuitant 'there are no arrears due but the counterclaim is seeking provision for the growing annuity.' Suit in Jamaican chancery started 1836, dismissed 1841. Letter received 26/03/1843 from Mrs Barbara Hewan [sp?] dated Jamaica 29th March 1842 stating that the only person who would be likely to act for her as trustee is her grandson and he has gone to Australia 'and is not likely to return'. Adjudged the interest and accruals to Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett as executor up to 23/11/1837 [=23/12/1837, when Samuel Barrett Moulton Barrett died?] and also the residue of the interest and accruals remaining in his own right; principal to John Altham Graham Clarke and Duncan Anderson as trustees [for Samuel Barrett Moulton Barrett, but which one?]

Barrett, The Barretts of Jamaica: The Family of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Athlone, Continuum International Publishing Group, 2000) p. 60: John Altham Graham Clarke was the eldest son of John Graham Clarke (died 1818), married slave-trader Leonard Parkinson's daughter. Estate still in Barrett family until late 19th century (p. 140).

Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. 209: highly favourable account of Retreat, S.M. BARRETT identified as owner, run by black overseer, Samuels. 'With perhaps the single exception of the apprentices on Hopeton and Lenox estates, The Retreat negroes possess, we believe, greater advantages than those on any property in the island.' Samuel Moulton Barrett had already abolished the whip (p. 210).

Note: there are two Samuel Barrett Moulton Barretts. One, the MP for Richmond [Yorkshire], brother of Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, died Jamaica 1837; the other was the son of Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, died in Jamaica 1840.
