Jamaica Almanac (1828): estate registered to Lord Seaford, with 455 enslaved persons.

Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. 229: the authors visited Montpelier estate, commenting, 'This property is in the same situation as many others, belonging to humane, well-intentioned proprietors, residing in England. The authority of the magistrate is in constant requisition'. Reference to the construction of a new dungeon: 'The erection of such a building, at a time when penal confinement on estates ought wholly to have ceased, requires no comment; and it has not been built to remain untenanted'; 'We saw also the hospital, which is the worst we have seen on a large estate, and is very dirty and offensive'.
