LLB/JD Double Degree Programme

Columbia Law School

After successfully completing the first year of either the LLB programme (M100) or LLB with Advanced Studies programme (M101), students may apply to transfer to the double degree programme which leads to a Bachelor of Laws honours degree from UCL and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University in New York. The Juris Doctor (or JD) is the American equivalent of the LLB.

Only two students per year are permitted to transfer into the double degree programme. Selection is based on academic merit and will have major financial implications for the students involved.

Students in the double degree programme spend two years at UCL and a further two years at Columbia Law School in New York. After completing all four years, successful candidates are awarded the LLB and JD degrees.

Applicants who are interested in this double degree programme should apply through UCAS for admission to either the LLB programme (M100) or LLB with Advanced Studies programme (M101). At the end of the first year of study, the faculty will inform students of procedures for applying to transfer to the double degree programme. There is no need nor opportunity to express a preference for the double degree programme at the UCAS application stage.
