UCL Laws Semester in London Programme
Since 1994, the Faculty of Laws at UCL has welcomed many students from the University of Texas at Austin and, more recently, from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Cornell Law School under the Semester in London Program.
Students from these three universities spend the first term of the academic year following a selection of classes offered by UCL on its LL.M degree course. They undertake assessments in London before Christmas, the results of which count towards their JD.
The Semester in London programme is only open to students of the University of Texas at Austin , Cornell Law School and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor .
The programme starts with a mandatory orientation meeting, and continues over the next three days with an induction programme including various lectures, educational visits, registration etc.
Choosing and Registering your Classes:
SIL students select their classes from those offered by UCL on their LLM degree course (except where a course is taught entirely in the second term).
Details of where and when LLM classes meet are sent out during the summer, and students are able to make an initial class selection at that time. Any subsequent changes in the LLM schedule is advised at the SIL orientation and there is a 2 week drop/add period.
SIL students from the University of Texas may follow 5 or 6 classes (by prior arrangement - see below), those from Cornell Law School are required to follow 5 courses, and those from the University of Michigan must follow 4.
Students from UT and Cornell are able to register for 6 courses upon payment of an extra fee and WITH PRIOR PERMISSION FROM THEIR HOME UNIVERSITY. Students wishing to register for 6 classes should indicate this when submitting their UCL application.
Students should bear in mind that this is a full-time programme of study and is expected to be the primary focus of your time in London . Regular attendance in class is required. To get an idea of the classes offered on the LL.M see: www.ucl.ac.uk/laws/prospective/llm/index.shtml?llm_subjects
Method of assessment :
Courses taken by Semester in London students are assessed either by a 2 hour written exam, or by a paper submitted at the end of term. The method of assessment is at the discretion of the lecturer concerned. Both methods of assessment are graded on a pass/fail basis.
Students will be advised which method will be used for each course when they choose their courses.
Exams:
Separate exams for Semester in London students are organised by, and held in, the Faculty of Laws, after the end of the term. The timetable for the final exams is made available at the beginning of November, but they are usually held during the week after term ends.
Dates: The SIL programme starts at the end of September with a mandatory orientation meeting followed by a 3 day induction programme. Classes usually start at the beginning of October, with the end of term in mid-December.
Housing: By special arrangement, SIL students are able to apply for UCL housing. For more information see www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/accommodation/
