Federal
Republic of Germany awards Professor Basil Markesinis high decoration
Professor
Basil Markesinis, Chairman of the Institute of Global Law, was recently
awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of Merit with Star by Germany’s
Federal President, Johannes Rau, for his services to comparative law,
German law and Anglo-German relations. The first British academic to
receive this decoration, Professor Markesinis will be formally presented
the Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Stern at a ceremony organised by Thomas
Matussek, German Ambassador to the Court of St James, in June 2003. As
the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals
for services to the nation, the Bundesverdienstkreuz may be awarded to
Germans as well as foreigners for political, economic, social or intellectual
achievements and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation
in the field of social, charitable or philantropic work.
