Bentham Association: UCL Laws Alumni Group

Membership of the Bentham Association mingling

UCL Laws, through the Bentham Association, is committed to helping alumni and the Faculty stay connected with each other in ways that are mutually beneficial and lasting.

The Bentham Association was set-up as the Bentham Club in 1949. It is run by a committee of volunteers. The current Chairman is Edwin Glasgow QC and the Honorary Secretary, based at the Faculty, is Jacqueline Dyson. The President changes on an annual basis.

What does the Bentham Association do for the Faculty?

  • The Bentham Association supports the Faculty awarding the Bentham Prizes for Jurisprudence and for Merit, and the Sir Jack Jacob Prize for Civil Justice.
  • Awards are also made to the Faculty Hardship Fund to assist students in financial difficulties.
  • This year a contribution was made to the UCL Jurisprudence Review, the only student law review in the UK.
  • In addition the Association supports the Faculty by helping with publicity for its events and other activities.

What can the Bentham Association offer me?

Membership of the Bentham Association gives you the chance to:

  • keep in touch with other alumni and the Faculty;
  • receive news of Bentham Association members activities and Faculty news;
  • receive notices of UCL Laws events such as our public lectures and professional development courses;
  • receive a discount of 15% on our fee paying professional development courses;
  • attend a Bentham Association sponsored drinks reception after a Current Legal Problems Lecture series;
  • attend the Annual Presidential Address and Dinner.

How our members help the Faculty
Bentham Association members assist the Faculty in many ways; for example, by judging moots and client interviewing competitions, assisting with student recruitment and careers, and helping to obtain sponsorship.

All UCL Laws graduates - whether LLB, LLM, PhD or diploma - are automatically enrolled as members; non-law graduates of UCL who are practising law are also eligible for membership.

The Bentham Association is an inclusive group. There is no membership fee.

Friends of the Bentham Association
We will shortly be launching an annual Friends of the Bentham Association programme. Funds raised will go towards helping our students with prizes and scholarships and assisting with other Faculty projects.
