STEPHEN MAYSON
Honorary Professor
LL.B, LL.M, Ph.D, Barrister, FRSA

Profile
After a long career as a consultant, I now serve principally as a non-executive director on various boards of law and law-related businesses, including Ince & Co, Trust Tees plc, DAS Law Ltd, and Brachers LLP, and as non-executive chairman of Meyler Campbell Ltd. I am also retained strategic adviser to the board of the Huthwaite Group, a member of the advisory board of Obelisk Support Ltd, chairman of the Professional Services Think Tank, a trustee of The Harpur Trust and chair of governors at Bedford School.

I was called to the Bar in 1977, and was for a time a tax lawyer with Clifford-Turner (before it became Clifford Chance). I became one of the first UK specialist consultants to law offices in 1985. Since that time I have acted as a strategic adviser to hundreds of law firms - including firms in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and South-east Asia. My advisory work has concentrated on strategy, law firm economics and valuation, and ownership and governance issues. I also have a particular interest in the implementation of the Legal Services Act 2007 and the effects that this is having on the market and on providers of legal services. My advice has also been sought by barristers' chambers, patent and trademark attorneys, corporate legal departments, governments, law societies and other professional associations.

In addition to my board and advisory work, I am professor of strategy at the University of Law. I follow developments in the legal services market and in regulatory policy, and engage with government, regulators, professional bodies, practitioners and others. I have a firm belief in the supply of effective legal services by strong, independent providers and practitioners who are appropriately regulated and qualified to offer professional advice and to manage their businesses. I am also a visiting professor at IE Law School in Madrid.

Since 2008, I have sat on a number of strategic and advisory groups for the Ministry of Justice, the Legal Services Board, the Legal Ombudsman, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Bar Standards Board, and the Bar Council.

I am the author of Law Firm Strategy: Competitive Advantage and Valuation (Oxford University Press, 2007) and Making Sense of Law Firms (Oxford University Press, 1997), as well as of other books on professional practice, and co-author with Derek French and Christopher Ryan of Company Law (30th ed., Oxford University Press, 2013). I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1991, and of the College of Law Practice Management in 2000.
