The Self-Access Centre

The Self-Access Centre is open from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Only UCL students and staff carrying a UCL ID card will be admitted.

The Self-Access Centre at UCL provides comprehensive facilities for self-study. Facilities include an on-line video library with over 3000 films, TV documentaries and satellite television, a language laboratory, CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), resource books, journals and newspapers.

The Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) facilities in the Self-Access Centre provide students with numerous options on the multimedia computers such as listening and recording, accessing corresponding text, watching digitised video materials and receiving immediate feedback; they also include grammar and vocabulary exercises.

The Satellite TV/Video viewing room offers the full range of English terrestrial channels as well as live satellite broadcasts in a range of languages. Users can also watch videos from a library of films, documentaries and course materials on these monitors. There is a modern language laboratory for audio work. To ensure student access to materials used in class teaching, several copies of the audio-cassettes from the main courses are available for use and many are duplicated in the central library, which offers a borrowing facility.

The Self-Access Centre contains a wide range of course books, grammar books, dictionaries, other support books and newspapers to assist with language learning. A database has been developed by tutors to enable students to find materials for listening, writing, reading, pronunciation and grammar easily and quickly. You can access this database by clicking on the language options on the left menu.

All facilities are easy to use, with clear instructions and documentation. There is always a member of staff in attendance and introductory sessions and advice on how to obtain the most out of self-study can be arranged.
