Online Dutch Courses
The Language Centre offers two tutor-supported distance-education comprehensive language courses for learners of Dutch, i.e. Lagelands 1 and Lagelands 2 for beginners and Hogelands for advanced learners, as well as two tutor-supported online courses teaching reading skills in specialized forms of Dutch, i.e. Early Modern Dutch and Business Dutch.

The beginner's courses Lagelands 1 and Lagelands 2 are designed to give you the skills you need to speak, read, write and understand basic Dutch in a range of practical everyday contexts. No previous knowledge of Dutch is required for Lagelands 1. In order to take Lagelands 2 you first have to have completed the Lagelands 1 course.
Hogelands, aimed at intermediate and advanced learners, consolidates the knowledge of Dutch you already and extends your language skills. It also enhances your cultural knowledge of Dutch-speaking societies.
The Early Modern Dutch Reading Skills Course is designed to give you the skills you need to read sixteenth and seventeenth-century Dutch texts. The course is for learners with only a minimal starting knowledge of Dutch.
The Business Dutch Reading Skills Course enables you to build up a reading knowledge of Dutch sufficient to cope with reading the business pages of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and magazines. It can be taken by learners with a minimal knowledge of the language.
The beginner's courses Lagelands 1 and 2 are taught over a 10-week period. The other three online courses run over a 20-week study period. All teaching is done on a one-to-one basis and the teaching hours are flexible. A new round of courses starts on the second week of every month, although it will be possible to join after the official start dates in consultation with Dr An Vanderhelst. Students also have the option to study specific skills such as speaking and listening on a one-to-one basis independently of the course rubrics.
