Part-time English Courses: October 2009 - June 2010

The Language Centre offers a variety of part-time English language courses to participants whose main language is not English. Most courses are open to both UCL and non-UCL participants.

Part-time English courses focus on four main areas as set out in the overview below.

IN-SESSIONAL EAP (for UCL students only)

Taught over 18 weeks (Term 1: 8 weeks; Term 2: 10 weeks), the In-sessional EAP course is designed to improve a broad range of academic English skills for use within UCL departments. Skills studied and developed will include: reading, writing (supporting the academic essay), listening, speaking (for seminars and presentations), pronunciation, and appropriate grammar and vocabulary.

After the course, participants may follow up with in-depth study of individual skills on other courses advertised here.

II ACADEMIC WRITING, READING and ADVANCED GRAMMAR

Our writing courses focus on elements of the academic essay and PhD dissertation.

  • Academic Writing Course For undergraduate (BA/BSc) and taught masters (MA/MSc) students. Covering the structures, organisation, conventions and language of academic writing using appropriate grammar and style.
  • Thesis Writing Courses Open to registered MPhil/PhD students only.
  • Academic Reading Course A course open to all, offering specific help with reading skills for participants who find this area difficult in their academic study.

III ACADEMIC SPEAKING AND PRONUNCIATION

These courses focus on speaking, pronunciation and giving presentations in an academic environment, with the aim of increasing participants' oral confidence.

  • Academic Speaking Skills A course focusing on speaking in seminars and public forums.
  • Pronunciation and Public Speaking A course to develop skills and confidence in speaking to an audience, supported by one individual 30-minute tutorial.
  • Pronunciation A course to help participants towards clearer pronunciation, supported by one individual 30-minute tutorial.

IV SPECIALISED COURSES

These courses focus on academic English skills for specific contexts. They are for non-native speakers of English only.

  • Advanced Legal Writing Skills For students enrolled on an LLM course (enrolment in Term 1 only; course taught over 14 weeks in Terms 1 and 2).

Most part-time English courses last between six and nine weeks and take place during one term. One-term courses are repeated each term. In the shorter summer term (Term 3), some courses are reduced in length and price.
