Studying English at the UCL Language Centre: An overview
All UCL English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Courses satisfy UCL’s English language proficiency requirements, and are also accepted by a number of other UK universities.
All full-time EAP courses have an average of 20 classroom hours per week and are for European and International (non-European) students.
Courses focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a university environment. Students are prepared for degree level study at UCL or at other UK universities by:
-
becoming familiar with the academic environment and conventions of the British Higher Education system
-
listening to academic lectures
-
taking effective notes
-
reading academic texts quickly and effectively
-
expressing ideas clearly and accurately in academic writing
-
giving oral presentations.
All courses are taught through classes, seminars and lectures within the university. Students have weekly individual tutorials (one-to-one sessions with their Personal Tutor) to discuss their academic progress.
Students will attend academic lectures given by leading UCL academics. Opportunities to attend academic lectures in a student’s degree subject area are also available.
A dedicated UCL Language Centre Education Adviser provides guidance on how to apply for UK undergraduate and graduate programmes. Optional IELTS preparation classes are included in all EAP courses.
Preparation for University at University
International students from all over the world come to study English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the UCL Language Centre. Students are enrolled at UCL as university students and have free access to all UCL facilities including libraries and ICT facilities. EAP students may also apply for university accommodation.
Students can join a wide range of cultural or sporting societies of UCL and University of London Student Unions.
