*** 13/02/2006 - PLEASE NOTE THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED *** Belief, the 'irrational' and historical explanation. The next session of the Dreams in History session will be held next Monday (see below for full details.) The theme this time is 'belief' and may be of interest to those who do not attend regularly. Below is an outline of some of the themes that will be under discussion. 'Belief' is a complex concept and is often used to describe the relationship of ancient people with regard to aspects conveniently and traditionally categorised as 'religious'. I will challenge the usefulness of the idea in connection with ancient thinking. The issue is whether the term 'belief' describes their relationship with religion and divination usefully. Implicit themes will be the difference between historical judgement (what do we think of what they did?) and explanation (can we understand why they did what they did, or at least describe it?). Our relationship with ideas and customs that we do not understand or endorse will be the central issue. A handout will be made available shortly. For more details of the series (including location details) please see .
