Contemporary Italian Culture & History
This MA programme (one calendar year full-time, two
calendar years part-time) equips students with a good knowledge and
understanding of major themes in Italian culture and history since
unification. It also provides them a set of theoretical and
methodological tools enabling them to examine these themes for
themselves, applying some of the most significant recent developments
in contemporary historiography, cultural theory and analysis. The
programme is designed for students wishing to further their interest in
modern Italian history and culture and for those intending to proceed
on to a research degree at MPhil and PhD level.
The MA degree can also serve as a 'conversion' degree, enabling students with first degrees in disciplines other than Italian to move onto a research degree in this field of Italian studies.
The programme can be taken in one of the following two ways, each totalling 180 credits:
Either:
- ITALG010: Core Course - Italy: A Difficult Modernity (40 credits)
- ITALG011: Module 1 - Contemporary Italian Histories (40 credits)
- ITALG012: Module 2 - Contemporary Italian Cultures (40 credits)
- ITALGC99: Dissertation (60 credits)
Or:
- ITALG010: Core Course - Italy: A Difficult Modernity (40 credits)
- ITALGC98: Dissertation: Research pathway (100 credits)
Plus one of these modules:
- ITALG011: Module 1 - Contemporary Italian Histories (40 credits)
- ITALG012: Module 2 - Contemporary Italian Cultures (40 credits)
All taught courses comprise two-hour seminars each week.
Students
on either pathway may apply to the degree convenor to substitute either
ITALG011 or ITALG012 with a course from the Faculty MA in Language,
Culture & History. This substitute course must be worth 40 credits
and be compatible with the focus of the Contemporary Italian Culture
and History programme. The Core Course may not be substituted.
