Italian Studies

Italian has been studied and taught at UCL since 1828, i.e., thirty-three years before Italy became a unified country. That means that our department has a longer history any other UK Italian department, and longer than most departments in Italy itself.

Our expertise covers periods from late medieval to contemporary, and with specific strengths in: Dante, Medieval Literature, Renaissance culture with a specific focus on the visual arts and the history of ideas, Romanticism, the political and cultural history of modern Italy, language study and linguistics, twentieth century avant-gardes, Mafia, Arte Povera, cinema, contemporary literature and graphic novels.
