Software

Users with special needs can use the Cluster WTS or Myriad services and adjust the appearance and behaviour of Windows 2000. Most users with disabilities may need utility programs with higher functionality for daily use.

Using the Accessibility tools, that ship with Windows 2000, a user can enhance accessibility for some vision-impaired, hearing-impaired, and mobility-impaired users without requiring additional software or hardware.

The Accessibility Options found in the Control Panel (click on Start > Settings > Control Panel) can be used to easily set up how you want to use your keyboard, display, and mouse functions.

The five tools available in the Accessibility Options in Control Panel perform various functions:

Keyboard StickyKeys enables simultaneous keystrokes while pressing one key at a time.
FilterKeys adjusts the response of your keyboard.
ToggleKeys emits sounds when certain locking keys are pressed.
Sound SoundSentry provides visual warnings for system sounds.
ShowSounds instructs programs to display captions for program speech and sounds.
Display High Contrast improves screen contrast with alternative colours and font sizes.
Mouse MouseKeys enables the keyboard to perform mouse functions.
General SerialKeys would allow the use of alternative input devices instead of a keyboard and mouse.

The Accessibility wizard takes the user through the stages of setting up the options and programs for your individual needs.

Physical Access

Information Systems is currently in an ongoing process of refurbishing its cluster rooms, making them more accessible and functional. As we replace older furniture, we now add modified tables so a minimum ratio of 1 in 20 are specifically designed for wheelchair access, matching the percentage of the population that is estimated to utilise a wheelchair. This varies across the clusters so that some, where access is notably easier (DMS Watson teaching/postgraduate clusters) and others that have a higher usage, will have a higher proportion (1 in 6). Some clusters, however, are constrained by the physical access to the building/floor and as such will never be accessible unless major works are carried out to the building infrastructure. We also purchase chairs that offer a greater degree of flexibility and support so that they can be adjusted for maximum comfort and ease, and the majority of clusters now have chairs less than two years old, with only a few public clusters remaining to be upgraded.
