Can I install my own software?
You are not able to install your own software. The Myriad system is as restricted as WTS however, you can change your settings for the software available and these will follow you around as you use different Myriad computers.
What software is available?
the range of software on Myriad is currently much smaller than that on
WTS, it does contain the most popular software, Office 2003 (with all
languages), IE 7, Firefox, Thunderbird, graphics applications and more. A broader range of
software can be accessed by logging into Cluster WTS from within Myriad.
The other software on the Myriad service falls into two categories. It is either:
a) multimedia based or
b) processor Intensive
Multimedia software, such as "Windows Media Player" and "QuickTime Player" can run poorly on WTS as it usually involves a large amount of screen changes such as when watching a movie file. These changes have to be sent to the local computer screen over the network and can run very slowly. Running them on Myriad will give you the local performance of the computer as this network traffic is not required. Nero Vision is also now available on Myriad which can play DVDs.
Processor Intensive Software
These currently include ArcGis 9.2 and Matlab R2007a. The former is available on WTS but has had some performance issues, whilst the latter is still available via Exceed on WTS.
There are several useful utilities available such as changing the screen resolution. You will also find PuTTy, WinSCP3 and Nero7 in the Utilities group.
