Frequently asked questions
What Devices can I use UCL GO! on?
The app itself can be used on any iPod Touch or iPhone running iOS version 3 or later.
Any other smartphone with a browser can be used to access the Web edition of UCL GO! at http://ucl.ombiel.co.uk
How do I get access to the UCL GO! Application?
The application can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes Store for free, and synchronised with your device when connected to your computer running iTunes.
Additionally, from your iPhone / iPod touch, you can download direct from the App Store.
How do I connect my mobile device to Wifi on campus?
Instructions can be found at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/isd/students/wireless/
Why do I have to logon to the application twice?
When you download the application, it asks you to register your name, university email address in the form ******@ucl.ac.uk, and a password (this can be any password and should not be your UCL one). This allows the application to register you as a user and store any preferences such as your friends and location sharing settings.
The email address will be used in case you forget your password.
When you first use the Directory, Library or Personal Timetable sections, you will be asked to enter your UCL username and password. This is required to authenticate your user credentials against UCL systems and ensure that only you can view your own personal Library and Course Timetable records.
What happens when I change my UCL password?
The 1st time you view Directory, Library or Timetable information following a change of password, the application will request that you log on again.
Note that there is a delay between the password change being made and this being propagated to all systems. If your computer network logon password has been changed, then this will work on UCLgo!
I have an issue with UCL GO! Who do I contact?
How do I set up the Friend Locator function?
- Set your sharing options. Your Location can be shared with No-one (None), Just your Friends (Friends), or everyone who has registered to use UCLgo!
- Select how often you want to update your location (at Startup, every 5 mins, every 10 mins or every 15 mins)
- Invite Friends. Select any friends who have registered to use the application. This will search the email addresses that have been registered
- View My Friends. Use the list of friends to see who is sharing their location and approximately where they are. Note that a red bullet next to a name shows that this person is not currently sharing their location.
Why is my location (or my friend’s location) not shown correctly?
The mobile device connects to the network using a network device. This may be a wireless router (in the case of a wi-fi connection) or a network base station (in the case of a 3G connection). The wireless router or base station are not able to exactly pin point the position of a mobile device, but provides an approximation of the GPS position.
Unfortunately due to the variation in signal strength and distance between routers/base stations, it is difficult to provide a consistent value for the accuracy of the device position.
Our testing has indicated that device positions can be up to 30 metres out when using the EDUROAM wi-fi connection on the campus.
How do I report that the Location of a building or room is incorrect or missing?
Please let us know via the ISD Service Desk
How do I provide feedback?
This can be done in several ways.
- We encourage users to Rate the App on the Apple App Store.
- Email Feedback on use of the application to feedback-uclgo@ucl.ac.uk
- Use the form on this website to request an enhancement or suggest further content which would be of use to Students on their mobile device
Issues should be reported to servicedesk@ucl.ac.uk
Why can I not see my Staff Personal timetable?
This application is aimed at the Student experience, and therefore only calls on the data from student timetable records.
If you are both a student and a member of staff, you will only see your student timetable entries.
If you are a member of staff only, you will see an empty timetable.
The vendor supplies a similar application that is aimed at Staff which would provide access to staff focussed information. At present there are no plans to introduce this, but this will be reviewed if there is a requirement in the future.
Why are some of my timetable entries missing?
Group information such a set of tutorials which have not been fitted by your department will be invisible in your Personal Timetable on the mobile device.
On the Common Timetable website, there is an option to view this unfitted group information.
Why is my library information incorrect /missing?
If you have both a staff and student userid, you may have 2 library records (even though only 1 of these is in use). As both userids have the same UCL Person Identifier (UPI), only 1 of these library records can be found by UCL GO! and this is what is shown. If this is not your primary library account, this can be changed by contacting the ISD Service Desk.
If you have a staff library record only, this will be shown.
