Wi-Fi networks use international radio technologies called IEEE 802.11, which includes the following variants:

  • IEEE 802.11b, which allows throughput up to 11Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz range. As of the 17th December 2012 802.11b is no longer supported.
  • IEEE 802.11g, which allows throughput up to 54Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz range
  • IEEE 802.11a, which allows throughput up to 54Mbps on the 5 Ghz range
  • IEEE 802.11n, which supports multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz range.

Wi-Fi certified adapters will automatically negotiate and connect using standard which both the client and station (Access Point) is capable of.
