Study materials

This syllabus is only relevant to candidates who started taking tests prior to 1st September 2009.  If you started your ECDL after this date please see the current syllabus.

The syllabus is split into seven modules, one of which is theoretical, the others practical. Each module is assessed by a 45 minute test. The tests can be taken in any order but all must be passed in order to receive the qualification.

Apart from Module 1, which tests knowledge of IT theory, each module is tested using a specific application and version. The application and version we currently have available to test your skills is given alongside each module below.

Testing

ECDL testing at UCL is carried out using simulation software.  This software simulates the Microsoft Windows and Office environment and captures the candidates keystrokes and mouse clicks and provides the test result automatically upon completion.  There are also practice tests or mocks available for each module.  These are 75 minutes long and cover the entire syllabus more comprehensively than the tests.

Preparing for tests

At UCL we offer two options for self-study for the ECDL, interactive online learning with Skills suite and downloadable paper-based materials.  Please visit the ECDL resources pages for more details.

You are welcome to attend courses in Microsoft Office and File Management provided by the Information Systems Training section but please note that these do not conform specifically to the ECDL syllabus.

Individual support is also offered on a drop-in basis to all candidates.

More details about preparing for tests will be given at the orientation.
